GWEN CLARKE


Gwen was born and raised on her family's dairy and market garden farm in Orbost, Victoria before working as a registered nurse in Melbourne's public hospitals for twelve years.

Although she has had no formal art training besides studying art at high school, Gwen has been interested in art, teaching herself to paint and draw from an early age.

As her parents advised her not to seek a career in the art field Gwen did not become a professional artist until 1965.

Gwen has shown successfully in Melbourne and Sydney, delighting her audiences with enchanting paintings of urban and classical scenes that are both lyrical and soothing.

Gwen is a member of the Australian guild of realistic artists and has been since 1975. her work is represented in collections all over Australia as well as internationally in both Europe and Canada. in 1988 her work was also accepted to hang in the prestigious Blake prize exhibition.

In 1990 Gwen's work was included in the "up from down under" exhibition which was shown at the Musee d'art Naif in Paris.

She is also the winner of the 1991 Victorian Moomba art prize.
